Not only are people needed for the 8 Drama Studio shows but also for the weekly radio play which requires a director and voice actors and in some cases a writer/adapter. If you are interested in being more involved and helping edit the plays etc then email our Radio Officer - Cate at theatre.company@shef.ac.uk.
Our 8 shows also need a Front of House team for each evening of each show. This consists of 4 ushers, a box-office manager, refreshments manager and Front of House manager. With the exception of the Front of House manager the other 6 positions require no previous training. Volunteering for these positions is a great way to get involved as you will be able to see the show for free as well as getting to know some of the older. If you are interested please email our Front of House Officer - Peggy Lim at theatre.company@shef.ac.uk mentioning the show, the day and the position you would be interested in.
How do I get involved in SuTCo?
We will be running a technical and publicity call, a radio call and auditions in the next few weeks for Autumn semester shows. We will also be present at the Activities Festival and committee members will be around the union and flyering. All you need to do is turn up to any of these places to register an interest. The best way for keeping up to date with what's going on is by signing up to our weekly email by sending a message to theatre.company@shef.ac.uk. There will also be an opportunity to sign up at the Activities Fair.
But what if I miss the boat at the start of the semester?
There are plenty of opportunities to get involved throughout the semester. Most shows don't get there technical operators and assistant stage managers until a couple of weeks before the show. The Radio plays also cast throughout the semester. There will also be frequent workshops, small projects and socials throughout the semester so come along and say hello at any of those. If that doesn't sound quite like your cup of tea then committee members will be doing office hours and we would really like it if people came along to chat to us about getting involved or anything at all! Alternatively you can send us an email to theatre.company@shef.ac.uk telling us how you would like to get involved.
I'm really keen to get involved but I haven't had any experience. Can I still get involved?
Absolutely! We run frequent training sessions with the Drama Studio technitian where you can learn all the skills you'll need to operate safely within the Drama Studio space. We are a very friendly and collaborative society and are always willing to help out less experienced members. There are many people around who have done the various roles before and are more than willing to help share their knowledge and experience.
You keep talking about the 'society' and 'society members' . Do I have to sign up anywhere or pay to join?
Sheffield University Theatre Company is actually a working committee of the Student's Union. This means that our funding is provided by the union whereas societies have to raise their own funding. This means that everyone in the Student's Union i.e. everyone at the University is a member of SuTCo free of charge.
