The Merchant of Venice is a play by William Shakespeare written between 1596 and 1598, and is somewhat misleadingly deemed a comedy. While undoubtedly funny in places, the play is well known for its issues of race and racism, identity, religion and persecution, with some of the most memorable Shakespearean monologues contained therein.
