That Face by Polly Stenham

12th - 15th February 2014

"That Face" is about a family which is disintegrating.  It is a hard-hitting, intense and visceral dissection of children who become parents to their parents. This is a family at the breaking point. That Face opens with two girls torturing a dorm-mate after lights out and it goes on to expose the plush-lined dysfunction of the wealthy family of one of the tormentors, Mia, who is neglected by her absent father and son-fixated mother.

Director's Note

First of all, thank you for coming to see That Face; the cast and crew have been working incredibly hard and so we real-ly hope you enjoyed the show!

Directing That Face has been both a joy and a challenge, with its darkly comc to its incredibly tense and emotional scenes, it has been a test of my ability to direct as well as the actor’s ability to be flexible. I chose to direct this play because Polly Stenham has created six complex, interesting and completely different characters in That Face, asking for a commitment from the cast to push themselves...and they sure did! As well as because I just think it’s a cracking play! I read that Elia Kazan’s concise directing advice was; “Before you do anything, see what talent does”, so after casting the play, I knew that we would be okay! My number one priority in rehearsals has been to have fun and I would like to think that in doing sowe have become a tight group of friends and I will certainly miss spending every day with these amazing people. So a massive thank you to the cast for all your hard work, commitment and fun; you are each so talented individually and it has been an absolute pleasure to direct you. To the designers: Teah, Bronwen, Fay and Elin – thank you for bringing this play to life you wonderful wom-en and to the ASMs and Ops who never get the recognition they deserve, this play could literally not go ahead without you. And last but very not least, my two musketeers Harprit and Katherine, whom I could not have functioned without. Thank you for being patient with me and for going above and beyond your expected roles – what would I do without you? Girl Power!
